Video Production Script

After 25 years in the business, we get a lot of questions about video production. One of the most frequently asked questions we get is “what is a video production script and why do I need one?” To answer that question, let’s first Ask Ashley!

A video production script is much more than just dialog. It is truly the master plan for your video!

Setting

Where is your production taking place? The setting for your video is a very important part of your script. The setting of any production is a great way to set the tone and mood for the video as well as showcase your business, school or venue. Deciding on the setting is a great first step when writing your script.

Dialog

The dialog of your video is a fundimental part of the finished production. This includes not only what video production scriptthe onscreen talent is going to say, but also covers any narration that you may have. When writing the dialog, keep in mind the feelings that you wish to convey and make notes to let the talent know what kind of mood you are trying to create. Is your video dark and mysterious, fun and joyful, or simply informative? All of this must be made clear to your voice over and on-screen talent.

Music

Adding music to your video is a fantastic way to highlight your over all message. Music, in addition to dialog, can take an average video and make it outstanding. It should be clearly marked in your script what type of music you want in your video and where the music should begin and end. Always remember to make sure that you have permission to use a song in your production. To learn more about acquiring song rights, visit the ASCAP’s website here.

Video & Graphics

Finally, any additional video and graphics must be noted in your script. First, it is a good idea to have your basic concepts down before thinking about graphics and complimentary video. Once you have a solid game plan, finding the moments to add graphics, logos, b-roll and other footage will be much easier. Always keep in mind that logos and film footage can also have copyrights. Make sure you have all permissions before adding them to your script. To learn more about editing and post production, visit our website here.
