2012...New Media New challenges
Along with the struggling economy the video production industry is faced with challenges from both an ever changing technology and new workflows. Perhaps the greatest challenge is the transition to a file based infrastructure. This is impacting our industry in two areas…content creation and content management.
When it comes to content creation we are seeing a shift in our industry from film and video to digital. We are now working with cameras that capture images directly to file. Those files are then processed and incorporated into the post production process. As a result, the creation of digital media requires both new technology and new ways of getting it done.
On the content management side, the rapid growth of file based activities and a tapeless environment means you have huge files that need to be maintained and moved from one step of the process to another. Along with managing this physical vault there is also a need to create a digital archive for long-term storage. What’s more, files are often repurposed so they can be used by a wide variety of end users.
While digital can make many things more streamlined and immediate, digital has also made some processes much more complex. Clients are constantly coming to us with new workflows and technology. With all the new cameras and file formats that people are now using in production and post-production, it is often up to us to create the standard for how things are done
Many of the challenges we face today did not even exist just two years ago. As we look to the year ahead our technology is changing every single day. The traditional way of doing things is evolving and for us to best serve our clients and customers we must continue to adapt to the times.

Nikon USA to stop selling camera parts to independent repair shops
Nikon USA last week sent a letter to thousands of independent camera repair shops, including several here in north Florida, saying "We will no longer sell you any parts." This means if you have a Nikon camera and need to get it fixed, you will soon be forced to send it off to an authorized repair center.
This is a major issue for the smaller repair centers that provide the same quality work for less money and offer faster turnarounds. Experts say preventing local repair shops from ordering parts will overload the limited number of authorized service centers and make it longer for cameras to get repaired.
However Nikon claims “the technology underlying today’s cameras is more complex than it has ever been and that specialized tools are now necessary to perform repairs on this complex equipment.” Nikon says the last day local repair centers may order parts is 180 days (early July) from the date of this notification.
There is also concern that besides tipping a lot of camera sales to Canon, who still sells parts to non-authorized camera repair businesses, it could weaken the Nikon brand image if owners find their cameras are more difficult to get serviced.

Tape Tips
Videotape contains a priceless collection of family history. Memories that cannot be replaced, memories that you will want to preserve and save for your children and children's children. This on-going series of useful tape tips is designed to provide you with the information you need to preserve your videotapes for future generations.
Store your tape in a high-quality, hard plastic (polypropylene) case.
This protects tape from dust, dirt, debris and damage should it be dropped. Cardboard sleeves provide little protection for either the cassette or the tape inside.
Label all tapes. Include subject and date.
This way you know exactly what is on the tape. This will help prevent you from picking up this tape and recording over something you may want to keep.
Put labels on correctly and only where they belong. Labels go on the tape's face and spine.
Poorly placed labels may come off when you put the tape in the VCR and cause it to jam.

Hey Dave. Love your newsletters.

  Staying Busy
The new year is starting off with several on-location shoots. A local attorney brought us in to videotape a client signing a will. The University of North Florida had us out to record their Distinguished Lecture Series. And finally we spent the day videotaping a training seminar for a large financial group that then had us edit the event and upload segments to the internet.
I would like to thank Bobby Walton for allowing us to combine and transfer all his videotapes to DVD.
But boxes of videotapes are not the only thing we are seeing. Cheryl Yungkurth brought in a huge box with nearly 500 35mm slides that we converted to .jpg images and transferred to CD.
Even though the holidays are over, a lot of people are still bringing in their old home movies for us to transfer to DVD. My good friend Michael Peck is now enjoying more than five hours (4,800 feet) of family history that we transferred for him to DVD. Also, Alex Graham dropped off 2,625 feet and had us make 11 DVD copies.
